Rotate-o-matic

Update 3/12/09: ZIP file containing project files, works with PHP5.

Summary: The rotate-o-matic program rotates a set of web pages through a web browser. Possible applications include a kiosk-type display for customers or any situation where you want web pages to automatically rotate on a screen.
Demo: See a demonstration of the rotate-o-matic
here.
Requirements: Mysql database, php4 or php5.

Step by step instructions:

  1. Download the ZIP file above and extract the files
  2. Import the topia_kiosk.sql file into your database.
  3. Edit the /admin/Connections/sabren.php file with your hostname, database name, username, and password.
  4. Upload the topia folder to your web server and enjoy!
Note: To edit the pages in the rotate-o-matic, point your web browser to the topia/admin/ directory.
If this is a pubic kiosk, you'll want to make the admin directory password protected.

HI there, I developed a similar web app to this, using Flash, a few years ago, and it is still used.

Recently I need a way to "reset" the timer (countdown) so that if a user is interacting with the
page content in the IFRAME, the timer will not reach zero while the user is still actively engaged.
But no modern browser allows this cross-frame (or iframe) communication AFAIK.

Unless I am mistaken, the very same security constraints would
prevent your content pages from using a Javascript call to somehow reset the timer at the top of
the page. (Of course only those content pages authored by the kiosk designer whose HTML
can be edited, not arbitrary pages from the outside WWW).

Do you agree? Do you think it would be possible?

Thanks,

Russ Welti
